Museo Civico Archeologico di Sarteano THE MUSEUM OF THE WATERS Chianciano has rightly added the word 'Terme' to its original place name, to demonstrate its ancient connection with water. By chance, the most important archaeological findings have been unearthed near the site of springs. That is why the Museo Civico Archeologico could not avoid adding 'delle Acque' to its title, in recognition of the town's perpetual connection with the primitive element. Inside, thousands of findings from excavations still underway in the region are to be admired. In fact, recently hundreds of often-intact Etruscan tombs have come to light with entire hoards of ceramics, utensils, cinerary urns and everyday objects. Amongst its most important artistic and historical exhibits are the completely-preserved contents of a princely tomb, the pediment of a temple and the world's largest collection of decorated Canopic vases. ETRUSCAN NECROPOLIS The underground corridor and the entrance floor cover a series of Etruscan tombs discovered in the area. The most ancient tombs were discovered in the Morelli necropolis. These date back to the last decades of the 7th century B.C. but in the surrounding areas archaeologists also found the ruins of settlements from the Roman period. Largest portion of the necropolis discovered so far is located in the village of La Pedata, but other remains that have been recently unearthed most probably belong to the same settlement. The most remarkable discovery is a princely tomb with Oriental influences, excavated in 1995 and reconstructed in its original size in the halls of the museum. Other pieces recovered from the Chianciano Terme necropolis are displayed in the Museum's basement, where five small cells opening up along the walls house sets of artifacts coming from Etruscan tombs discovered in the Tolle necropolis, not far from the Foce pass, among which some extremely interesting funerary vases called "canopi" (ossuaries with animal heads) as well as personal ornaments and tools made of bronze and iron. ETRUSCAN TEMPLES On the first floor we find the Etruscan pediment which dates back to the II century B.C. Recently found near the water fonts of Fucolli, beautiful statues which seem to represent the myth of God Dionisio. Also a sanctuary dating back form the V century B.C. was discovered near the Sillene springs: in its original period this sanctuary was dedicated to female divinities, represented by a carriage pulled by two horses, of which many fragments remain ETRUSCAN FARM The second section is made up of the reconstruction of two rooms of the late-Etruscan farm located in Poggio Bacherina ( 3rd -2 nd centuries B.C.), which were dedicated to the production and preservation of wine. The wine was kept in big vases called "dolia" which were lined up along the walls of the wine cell, always built facing north, as advised by ancient agronomists since the cold northern winds ensured a better preservation of the wine. THE ROMAN SPAS On the second floor of the museum we can find an interesting thermal bath from the imperial age of Camerelle and Mezzomiglio, where excavations have brought to light a very important thermal system which dates back to the II century AD characterized by a spa area and by this great bath. L'ANTIQUARIUM On the basement level there are the collections of Terrosi and Grossi. The Terrosi collection consists in ceramics and Etruscan gold of an oriental period. The Grossi collection is made up of jewerelly and an ancient amphora representing the myth of Ratto and Europa. LARTHIA This new area represents the image of the woman in the Etruscan society: the crucial role which covered maternity, funeral rituals, but also cosmetics and the management of the household. |
